Summary of Changes to Hospital Acquired Conditions

Two codes added to the existing vascular catheter-associated infection HAC category:

  • 999.32 (bloodstream infection due to central catheter)
  • 999.33 (local infection due to central venous catheter)

Two new conditions added to HACs:

  • Surgical site infection following cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED)
    996.61 or 998.59, in combination with the associated procedure codes below: (see p. 53287 for entire text of code list)

    • 00.50 – 00.54 cardiac resynchronization device procedures (pacemaker, defibrillator, leads)
    • 37.80 – 37.87 insertion/replacement pacemaker procedures
    • 37.94 Implantation or replacement AICD
    • 37.96 Implantation of AICD pulse generator
    • 37.98 Replacement of AICD pulse generator
    • 37.74 – 37.77 Insertion/replacement epicardial/atrial/ventricular leads
    • 37.89 Revision/removal pacemaker device
  • Iatrogenic pneumothorax with venous catheterization
    • Diagnosis code 512.1, in combination with the associated procedure code 38.93 (Venous catheterization NEC)
